Most villa owners understand that aerial coverage adds something to their listing that ground photography cannot deliver. A well-composed aerial image communicates compound size, privacy, surrounding environment, and location context in a single frame. What is less well understood is the difference between drone photography and drone video — and why that distinction matters significantly for how you use the content.
This guide is for owners making a decision about aerial coverage for the first time, or reconsidering their current setup.
What Drone Photography Delivers
Drone photography produces a set of high-resolution still images captured from altitude at multiple heights and angles. A standard aerial photography session for a Bali villa typically yields 5 to 15 edited images depending on the scope of the shoot and the complexity of the property.
These images can show the villa from directly above — communicating compound footprint and layout. They can show the villa from a low oblique angle — communicating the building’s architecture and relationship to surrounding landscape. And they can show the villa from a position that a guest would never see from the ground — demonstrating exactly how private or how open the property is, and what lies immediately around it.
Crucially, drone still images can be uploaded directly to OTA listing platforms. Airbnb, Booking.com, Agoda, and VRBO all accept and display high-resolution still photography as standard listing images. An aerial still chosen as the cover photo communicates the villa’s scale and position instantly in search results — often the single most effective cover image for a villa with strong compound presence or an elevated position.
What Drone Video Delivers
Drone video produces a cinematic moving sequence — typically 60 to 120 seconds of edited footage for a villa shoot — that captures the property in motion. The experience of watching a villa through a smooth aerial descent, a sweeping arc over the pool, or a reveal from above the treeline is genuinely compelling. For the right property and the right audience, it is the most effective marketing format available.
The challenge is deployment. OTA listing platforms do not support video. You cannot upload a drone video to your Airbnb listing, your Booking.com listing, or your Agoda listing. The video file has no place to live on the platforms where the majority of villa bookings originate.
Drone video is effective marketing content for channels that support it: a villa-specific Instagram account where Reels drive follower engagement, a YouTube channel, a direct booking website with video capability, or marketing materials targeting the weddings and events segment, where video walkthroughs are standard pre-booking collateral.
The Practical Distinction for OTA-Focused Owners
This creates a clear decision framework. If your primary goal is improving your performance on Airbnb, Booking.com, or Agoda — which is the goal for most villa owners reading this — drone photography delivers direct, deployable value. Drone video does not, because there is no place on those platforms to use it.
Owners who commission drone video without an active villa Instagram account, a direct booking website, or a specific events/weddings marketing programme are paying for content they cannot deploy in the channels that generate their bookings. It is not that drone video is a poor investment — it is that it requires the surrounding infrastructure to actually perform.
When to Choose Drone Stills Only
Drone photography alone is the right choice when:
- Your primary channel is OTA platforms (Airbnb, Booking.com, Agoda, VRBO)
- You do not have an active villa-specific social media presence or a direct booking website
- The villa’s aerial selling point is its compound size, position, or immediate surroundings — which a well-composed still communicates clearly
- You are working within tighter budget constraints and want maximum deployable value
A single well-selected aerial still as your listing cover photo can have a disproportionate impact on click-through rate. Bali’s best-performing villa listings in Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu, and Ubud consistently use aerial imagery in their top positions. Stills alone achieve this.
When to Add Drone Video
Drone video adds meaningful value when:
- You have a villa-specific Instagram account that you actively post to (Reels format)
- Your villa has a direct booking website that supports embedded video
- You are targeting weddings, events, or corporate retreats, where video walkthroughs are expected in the quotation and enquiry stage
- Your villa has cinematic features — a pool that cantilevers over a cliff edge, a compound that opens dramatically from above — that a video sequence communicates more powerfully than stills
If any of these apply, the combination of drone stills and drone video from the same flight session is the most efficient approach. The incremental cost of capturing video footage during a drone session is lower than a separate return visit, and you capture both formats from the same golden-hour window.
The Hybrid Approach
In practice, many professional shoots in Bali include both formats, captured in the same flight session during the same golden-hour window. The still images go directly to OTA platforms. The video footage is edited and delivered separately for social and website use.
If you are planning a full villa photography shoot that already includes a drone session, it is worth discussing with your photographer whether capturing video footage during the same session makes sense for your specific marketing situation. The answer depends on what channels you are using and what content you can actually deploy.
Bali Airspace Restrictions
Not all Bali locations allow drone operation without permits. Properties within the designated airspace around Ngurah Rai International Airport — including significant portions of Kuta, Jimbaran, and Nusa Dua — require special permits for commercial drone operation. Some areas are restricted outright.
If your villa is in or near these zones, confirm with your photographer before booking. A professional photographer operating in Bali should be familiar with the permit requirements and restrictions for their regular shooting locations. Attempting to fly without appropriate clearance in restricted zones creates legal exposure and can result in shoot delays or cancellation on the day.
For villas in Canggu, Seminyak, Uluwatu (away from the cliff hotel corridors), Ubud, Tabanan, and most of Gianyar, drone operations are typically straightforward with standard commercial operator registration. Your photographer should confirm this for your specific address.
